With the summer ending, it can be common to experience some dread, anxiety, and sadness over the transition to the latter half of the year. For many, this can mean an increased work load, more familial obligations, and the end of summer plans. However, there are some hidden benefits to the autumn season that can be helpful to lean into in order to feel grounded and hopeful during the transition.

A feeling of refreshment:

Yes, the end of the summer does typically mean more of a schedule shift in terms of work, school, and home life. While this can be intimidating, it can also be helpful to build a sense of routine and review some pre-existing commitments. What would you like to keep doing? What feels like it’s time to move away from?

Time slows down:

While the summer months can be jam packed with fun, the fall can bring a much needed break. With the amount of plans settling down, it opens up space for folks to enjoy personal interests and sink into nurturing themselves. Spending time in the evenings relaxing rather than schlepping to the beach can provide so much for mental restoration.

Enjoying the outdoors:

The summer can be full of sunshine and beach days, but it can also be really harsh on our bodies and minds. Navigating day after day of heat and humidity can leave people feeling overstimulated and exhausted. For some, mental health symptoms can also worsen during the warmer months. With the cooler temps of fall, the outdoors can become more accessible. There is less risk of heat exhaustion and the climate can feel more comfortable and less triggering.

Creating comfort:

While the summer may be more focused on getting out and about, the fall can provide incentive on shifting our focus towards getting cozy. This might be the time to think about how to find joy in the small moments. Having people over, sharing meals, decorating our spaces, these are all aspects of creating a focus on being present in our day to day.

Better rest:

As discussed prior, the fall can really lend itself to slowing down. This might also make for better sleeping conditions, alongside the cooler temps.

It is important to remember that change impacts everyone differently. Maybe you’re already looking forward to the autumnal vibes. However, if you’re finding yourself bracing for impact, it can be helpful to think of these benefits to help you move into the season instead of resisting it.
