Okay, so you meet another mom, start chatting, and before you know it you’re deep into nap schedules, snack preferences, and preschool drama. While conversation topics of this nature are incredibly valuable, sometimes you just want to talk about something that taps into the other parts of your identity outside motherhood.

If you’re craving a deeper, more meaningful connection with other women,  here are 10 easy, down-to-earth conversation starters that help you bond over shared interests, hobbies, and maybe even relatable emotional states.

1. “Have you discovered any great local spots lately?”

Coffee shops, walking trails, cute little lunch places; moms are great at discovering hidden gems. This one gets the conversation rolling and might even lead to, “We should go together sometime!”

2. “Can you recommend a hair/nail/massage place?

With the implied emphasis on self-care, this question is a great way to get local recommendations, while also feeling casual and breezy.

3. “Watched or listened to anything good lately?”

Whether she’s a podcast girlie, a Netflix-binger, or the smutty book-lover type, this question is a great way to discover if you two have any common interests. Who knows, you might walk away with a new recommendation (or a shared obsession).

4. “Are you from around here originally?” If not, “Where are you from and what brought you to the area?”

This is a great conversation starter and a way to learn a little more about someone’s personal history. Who knows, you might also know a little bit about the area and this could easily lead into a more detailed discussion about someone’s pre-motherhood life.

5. “Are you more of a cook-at-home or order-in kind of person?”

Because honestly, both are valid. You can swap quick dinner recipes, restaurant recommendations, or even easy meal hacks.

6. “If you had a totally free weekend to yourself, how would you spend it?”

It’s fun to dream, right? You’ll learn a lot about what she loves and probably realize you both fantasize about sleeping in till 10 and drinking coffee while it’s still hot.

7. “Have you checked out any fun local events or classes?”

There’s always something fun going on when you live in or near a big city. Whether it’s yoga in the park, art markets, or book clubs, this question can turn into actual plans if you hit it off.

8. “Do you have any hobbies or creative outlets?”

A lot of moms put their hobbies on the back burner, but this opens the door to talk about what they love (or miss doing). Pottery? Pilates? Making sourdough again (but, like, actually keeping the starter alive this time)?  This question is a great way to talk about goals, interests, and hobbies.  Bonus: it might inspire you to pick something up again, too.

9. “How do you like to stay active?” or “Do you go to a local gym or attend workout classes?”

Maybe she’s into running, dance workouts, or just walking with an iced coffee. Either way, it’s a light and relatable topic for many and emphasizes the importance of self-care and moving your body in whatever way feels powerful for you.

10. “What’s something that’s made you laugh lately?”

Funny TikToks, ridiculous mom moments, that one meme that hits way too close to home; this question keeps things easy and fun.

It’s easy to default to talking about the kids, but the best mom friendships happen when you connect in other areas as well. Ask about what makes her happy, what she’s into, what helps her feel like her.  While being a mom is a huge part of who we are, it’s not the only thing that makes us worthy or interesting.
